A cover letter answers one question: why are you a good fit for this particular role? Generic phrases do little to help; concrete examples do a lot.
A four-part structure
- Opening: Name the position and one concrete reason why it interests you.
- Fit: Pick two or three requirements from the ad and show, with one example each, how you meet them.
- Contribution: Briefly describe what you want to bring to the role.
- Closing: Offer to talk and, if requested, state your start date or salary expectations.
Practical tips
- One page is usually enough.
- Use the wording of the ad where it honestly applies to you.
- Read the text aloud – awkward sentences stand out faster.
- Double-check the company's name and address.
If no cover letter is requested
Some employers explicitly do without one. Follow the instructions in the ad; a short, relevant note in the application form may then be enough.
